Distribution : arctic coasts in summer; Europe and north Africa in winter.

Description:

Size: 17-19 cm in length with a 35-41 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Adults have a gray-brown back and wings, a white belly, and a white breast with one black band over the neck. They have a brown cap, a white forehead, a black mask around the eyes and an orange and black bill. Juveniles are generally duller than the adults, with an incomplete gray-brown breast band, a dark bill and dull yellowish-gray legs. The eyes are black.
