Distribution: eastern North America, north to southeastern Canada in summer.
Size: 28-34 cm in length with a 36-46 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Males appear all black at a distance but are actually highly iridescent, with colors varying from blue to purple to green to bronze, depending on the light. Females are duller and somewhat smaller than males. The beak and legs are black and the eyes are yellow.
