Distribution: northwestern North America in summer; southern United States and northern Mexico in winter.
Size: 48-56 cm in length with a 79-89 cm wingspan, weighing 800g-1.5 kg.
Plumage: Males have a whitish body, black chest, and reddish head with a low forehead. The long bill gives the head a sloping profile that is characteristic of the species. Females are generally grayish, with a sandy-brown head. The bill is black and the eyes are bright red.
