Distribution: Alaskan coasts in summer; coasts of Canada south to northern Mexico in winter.
Size: 22-25 cm in length with a 50-55 cm wingspan.
Plumage: In summer, bith sexes have black uppersides, head, and breast; a large white spot in front of the eye and one white line above the eye; and fine white spotting from the neck across to the side of the breast and a white belly. In winter, they are generally dusky black with an unstreaked white belly. In flight, a black and white pattern can be seen. The legs, beak, and eyes are black.
