They inhabit the forests of North America - across Alaska, Canada and the north-western United States.

Description:

This is a medium-sized woodpecker measures about 23 cm in length.

Adults have black markings on the head, back, wings and rump. There is white from the throat to the abdomen.  The flanks are white with black bars.  There are white outer feathers on the otherwise black tail.
