Distribution: South America excluding the upper Amazon basin; discontinuously in eastern Central America through Mexico up to southwest Texas.

Description:

Size: 37-47 cm tall with a 80-90 cm wingspan. Females weigh 271–460 g and males weigh 208–305 g.

Plumage: Adults have orange to dull red underparts, a gray back, a long tail with grayish-brown and white bands, and a black and white horizontally striped facial pattern. The upper breast is white and the lower breast is black and white horizontally streaked. The eyes are black with yellow eye rings, the legs are yellow, and the beak is black on top and yellow on bottom, with a black tip. Juveniles are tawny to dull red where adults are white.
