Description:

Size: 23-25 cm in length with a 41-43 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Breeding adults have a black head, gray back, white underside, white plume over the eye, and small white-barred area at the side of the neck. In winter, a wide white area on the throat and face and the back are solid slate-gray. The beak is white and the eyes are black.
