Distribution: Throughout central North America in summer, south through Mexico to Venezuela in winter.
Size: 11-14 cm in length with a 16-23 cm wingspan, weighing 7-12 g.
Plumage: Males are black with bright orange patches on the wings and tail, and a white underside. Females and juveniles are dull olive-brown above and white below, with yellow wing and tail patches. Juvenile males have a darker tail and some irregular patches of black on the head and body. The legs, beak, and eyes are black on males and brown on females.
