American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana)

Distribution: Western United States, south through Mexico and the Caribbean in winter.
Size: 40-51 cm in length with a 68-76 cm wingspan, weighing 275-420 g.
Plumage: The uppersides and wings are patterned in black and white; the undersides are uniform white. The head and neck are rust-colored in summer and white in winter. The legs are gray and the beak and eyes are black. The slender upturned beak is distinctive of the species.
