Parrots, hookbills psittaciformes
Parrots - also sometimes referred to as "Hook Bills" for their distinctive large, hooked bills - can be found in most of the warm parts of the world, including India, southeast Asia and west Africa. However, by far the greatest number of parrot species come from Australasia, South America and Central America.
This group includes the following superfamilies:
- the Psittacoidea ('true' parrots)
- the Cacatuoidea (cockatoos)
- the Strigopoidea (New Zealand parrots).
Greatest diversity of parrots occur in South America and Australasia.
- strong, curved bill
- clawed zygodactyl feet
- most are vividly colored, some are multi-colored.
