Gulls, terns, skimmers bird family: Laridae, order: Charadriiformes

The members of the bird family Laridae are seabirds that range in size from fairly small to large and heavy-bodied.  They have long wings, stout bills and webbed feet.  They are usually white below with a back that ranges from pale grey to black.  Some develop dark hoods during the breeding season.

They are usually found along the coasts, but may also occur inland, but generally near water.
