Avocets and Stilts are closely related waders with a near-global distribution, except Antarctica. They are typically found in warm or hot climates in brackish or saline wetlands.
They have long necks, long legs and long, thin bills. In Avocats, the bills are curved upwards.
Most members of this family have a variable black and white plumage, sometimes with patches of buff or brown on the head or chest.
