Azure Jay

The Azure Jays (Cyanocorax caeruleusoccur naturally in the Araucaria angustifolia forests in the south of Brazil in South America.

This is the state bird of Paraná.

Distribution / Range

Their range stretches from the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro down to the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The highest concentration is found in the Atlantic forest.


The Azure Jay measures about 40 cm in length, from top of the head down to the tip of the tail. The plumage is mostly blue, except for black feathers on the head, on the front part of the neck, and on the upper chest. Males and females look alike; except males tend to be larger.

Diet / Feeding

These jays feed on pine nuts (seeds of the Araucaria), as well as on insects and fruits.
